Kerala has been a favourite haunt of travellers from around the world for nearly 600 years. From coconut palm-lined coasts and rolling hills of tea to elephant and tiger reserves, this slender state has a lot to offer. It’s been known to exhilarate, enchant and enthrall one and all.

And Munnar promises to provide you with one such enchanting experience…!

Coming Home to Nature

One of the first things you’ll notice about Munnar is how far away it seems from the concrete jungles that we call home. It is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams – Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala 1,600 m above sea level. This cozy town was once the summer resort of the erstwhile British Government in South India. Sprawling tea plantations, picture-book towns, winding lanes and holiday facilities make this a popular resort town.

The rolling hills around Munnar are carpeted in emerald-green tea plantations, contoured, clipped and sculpted like ornamental hedges. The low mountain scenery is magnificent – you’re often up above the clouds watching veils of mist clinging to the mountaintops.

Things to do

Munnar provides travellers with ample opportunities to explore and enjoy the captivating hill station. There are many incredible places to visit in and around Munnar.

Devikulam, which is about seven kilometers from Munnar, is home to the Sita Devi Lake. It is an ideal place to visit with its velvet lawns, exotic flora and fauna and the cool mountain air creating the perfect atmosphere for a short trip. And if you’d like, you can even go trout fishing in the lake!

Located between Munnar and Rajamala, Nyayamakad is a land of waterfalls. The waters cascade down a hill from a height of about 1600 meters, providing one with a breath taking view.

Munnar is also known to attract those seeking adventure. Paragliding over the valley is bound to provide one with that desired adrenaline rush. One can also trek to Anaimudi (South India’s highest peak) or Lock Heart Gap. Hikes originating at the confluence of three mountain streams are also popular.

Eravikulam National Park which is at a short distance from Munnar is an absolute must-visit. Declared as a sanctuary in 1975, this is home to the Nilgiri Tahr. It has 97 square kilometres of rolling grasslands and high level sholas (evergreen forests). The park is breathtakingly beautiful and easily comparable to the best mountain ranges found anywhere in the world.

And that’s not all. In the southern region of the park lies the highest peak of the Western Ghats – Anaimudi (2695 Metres). Echo Point and Top Station are two other places that will provide you with the heavenly views of the mountain valley.
